Abstract:	This paper discusses the evolution of the concept of reference in Eco'c semiotic theory, from his first contribution in 1975 to his most recent in 1997. Discussing also Husserl, Hjelmslev and Peirce the paper presents an original suggestion for how the problematic issue of refrrence should not be approached within a semiotic perspective, disentangling it form the traditional framework of analytical philosohy and its objectivistic assumptions, in a move towards a phenomenological and experiential grounding.
