This publication constitutes a deliverable of the INCODING project – Democracy at Work through Transparent and Inclusive Algorithmic Management. It's a case studies report that examines the role of collective bargaining and employee involvement in the governance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Algorithmic Management (AM) at German workplaces. It includes an overview of the current legal and regulatory framework surrounding these technologies in Germany and presents a detailed comparative analysis of two empirical company case studies: a digital food delivery platform and a mechanical engineering manufacturing firm. Through these contrasting examples, the report explores how algorithm-based systems are implemented for process optimization, their differing impacts on workers' autonomy and daily tasks, and the specific strategies and challenges faced by works councils and trade unions when negotiating transparency, data protection, and fair working conditions. |
