Resum: The Declaration of the Rights of the Child, approved by the United Nations in 1959, includes the right to spiritual development in its second principle. Unfortunately in subsequent conventions this right received no further mention, as Watson (2009) notes. This omission prompts a series of questions. Why did the right to spiritual development disappear? Has spirituality lost its value for 21st-century society? What role can spirituality and religion play in our lives and, more specifically, in children's lives? Should teachers, including those in secular schools, deal with the subject in the classroom? How? To answer these questions we need to bear in mind the prevailing conditions in our globalised world. Education is deeply influenced by economics and politics, especially in OECD countries. The hegemonic system of globalised neoliberalism sees education from a market perspective in which competition and efficiency are the driving principles (Casal, Garcia, & Merino, 2007; McInerney, 2004).
