Abstract: Marked by a diminished sense of embodiment, individuals with severe and chronic mental health conditions-particularly schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs)-often exhibit profound self disruptions. These challenges can hinder their ability to engage in dance movement therapy (DMT), which depends largely on the individual's capacity to connect with and express intra and interpersonal conflicts through bodily improvisational movement and play. In search of valuable insights into enhancing the therapeutic outcomes of DMT within psychiatric healthcare settings, this 12-week developmental project introduces an innovative approach by incorporating the Feldenkrais Method® (FM) of somatic education as a warm-up at the start of each session. By primarily focusing on the individual's interoception and proprioception, these interventions aim to activate participants' inherent capacity for self-awareness and self-education through structured somatic explorations. Highlights on the critical role of sensory-motor systems in shaping embodied presence and sense of self within this population suggest potential improvements in physical, psychological, and social well-being.
