Abstract:	Over the past decades, anti-discrimination campaigns have become a central strategy in efforts to foster more inclusive and equitable societies. Whether in the form of public service announcements, billboard images, or social media videos, such campaigns aim not only to inform but also to unsettle, to confront viewers with the emotional and social realities of racism, sexism, ableism, and other forms of exclusion, and to challenge the taken-for-granted norms that sustain unequal treatment (McBride, 2015; Sutton et al. , 2007; Jensen et al. , 2010). In Belgium, the setting of the current study, anti-discrimination messaging is especially prominent, ranging from official government initiatives to grassroots projects. Yet the same visual tools used to provoke empathy and promote inclusion can also be weaponized. Recent controversies, such as an AI-generated political image by Dutch politician Geert Wilders contrasting a blonde woman with a veiled Muslim woman to stoke polarization, underscore how visual rhetoric can be mobilized to reinforce exclusion rather than dismantle it.
