La Cultura britànica mitjançant les imatges : un exemple de la pàgina web d'història i cultura

Resumen:	Els nostres estudiants de segon cicle han de cursar una assignatura troncal anomenada Història i Cultura dels països de parla anglesa. Encara que hagin assolit un bon nivell d'anglès tant oral com escrit, tenen moltes llacunes de referències culturals i històriques dels països de parla anglesa. Han d'assolir molta matèria en relativament poc temps. Una altra dificultat és la manca de texts adaptats a la seva condició d'estudiants adults estrangers. Gairebé tots els llibres de text existents al mercat no aporten suficient informació i profunditat intel·lectual per universitaris de parla no anglesa. Mitjançant la creació d'una pàgina web de l'assignatura, hem volgut motivar els estudiants a buscar i contrastar informació. Donat la enorme quantitat de material disponible en internet, és molt important que els professors fixem pautes perquè els estudiants sàpiguen distingir les fonts i aprenguin a desconfiar (una actitud que creiem que és molt sana) de tot el que surt en la web. Com exemple de tot allò que hem estat fent, proposem demostrar com un tema, que pot semblar impossible de resumir en una sola classe per la seva gran envergadura com és l'esclavatge i la seva abolició en 1833 en l'imperi britànic, pot arribar a ser entendor i ame. Proposem ensenyar als assistents aquelles parts de la pàgina web que fan referència a la campanya a favor de l'abolició i tota la herència històrica perquè vegin com hem intentat estimular els estudiants intel·lectualment sense deixar de banda el fet que per la majoria d'ells, aquests fets no tenen cap lligam a la societat britànica contemporània.
Resumen:	Our second cycle students have to take a core subject called History and Culture of the English-speaking Countries. Although they have achieved a high level of spoken and written English, they have serious gaps in their knowledge of cultural and historical events in the English-speaking world. They are obliged to cover a great deal of material in a relatively short period of time. Another difficulty is the fact that there is a dearth of suitable textbooks for adult foreign students. Hardly any of the books that are available on the market provide enough information and intellectual depth for non-English speaking university students. By means of the construction of a webpage for the subject we have tried to motivate the students to search and contrast information. Owing to the enormous amount of information available on internet, we believe it is vital for the teachers to establish guidelines o the students can distinguish between sources and learn to question all the data that appears on the web (this being a very healthy attitude in our opinion). As an example of what we have been doing, we propose to show that with one topic that would appear to be impossible to cover in one sole session as is the importance of slavery and its abolition in the British Empire in 1833 can be taught in a way which both stimulates and interests the students. We propose to show the parts of the webpage that refer to the campaign for the abolition of the slave trade and all its historical legacy. This way it will be clear how we aim to stimulate the students intellectually without forgetting that for most of them these facts do not have any cultural link with contemporary British society.
