Additional title: The Concept of Nature in Barcelona at the Turn of the XVIII and XIX Centuries: Linnean of Buffonian?
Date: 2008
Abstract: Carl von Linné and George-Louis Leclerc, the count of Buffon, can be considered as the two most important representatives of natural history in the 18th century. Their antagonistic ideas about nature and how it should be studied and their beings classified led to polemics for a long time and had a great influence on natural sciences in their own epoch and even a century later. Here it's studied how these opposing ideas were assimilated and defended in Barcelona, through manuscripts written in the last decade of the 18th century by two apothecaries, members of the Academy of Sciences, and through several works of Agustí Yáñez, professor of natural history in the pharmacy college of Barcelona in the first decades of the 19th century, who wrote textbooks and other contributions to the diffusion of natural sciences.
