O artigo versa sobre a vontade na contemplação mística a partir dos capítulos de 11 a 13 da obra de João da Cruz intitulada Noite Escura. Vemos, aqui, uma leitura própria de nosso autor no tocante às relações entre vontade e entendimento, especialmente ante a "inflamação de amor" na alma.
The article is about the will in mystical contemplation. From the chapters 11-13 of the John of the Cross's work entitled The Dark Night. There is in this book a original reading of John of the Cross on the relationship between will and intellect, especially with the "inflammation of love" in the soul.

The essay analyses the role of the imagination and of the image («phantasia», «phantasma») in the Secretum and in four sonnets of the Rerum Vulgarium Fragmenta according to the conception of passions developed by Aristotle and Galen, and later inherited by Arabic and Scholastic physicians and natural philosophers.

The starting point of this article is a reading of the first two chapters of Sigmund Freud's Civilisation and Its Discontents, published in 1930, and an assessment of their validity. What Freud indicates in these chapters is that, starting from the contingency of existence, both of the one and of the other (I and my fellow), neither finds any fundamental necessity for an ethics regulated exclusively by the principle of pleasure.
