33 p, 440.1 KB Generative Grammar and the Faculty of Language : Insights, Questions, and Challenges / Chomsky, Noam (University of Arizona) ; Gallego, Ángel J.. (Gallego Bartolomé) (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Filologia Espanyola) ; Ott, Dennis (University of Ottawa)
This paper provides an overview of what we take to be the key current issues in the field of Generative Grammar, the study of the human Faculty of Language. We discuss some of the insights this approach to language has produced, including substantial achievements in the understanding of basic properties of language and its interactions with interfacing systems. This paper tries to shed light on traditional and current observations that give support to the idea that language is subject to critical period effects. It is suggested that this idea is not adequately grounded on a view on language as a developmental phenomenon which motivates the suggestion of moving from the now classic concept of language as a 'faculty' to a new concept of language as a 'gradient': i. 29 p, 373.0 KB La biología evo-devo, el crecimiento del cerebro y la evolución del lenguaje / Balari, Sergio (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Filologia Catalana) ; Lorenzo González, Guillermo
This article explores an explanation for the evolutionary origins of the computational system of the faculty of language based on current evo-devo thinking. Specifically, we argue that the Chomsky's "Hierarchy of computational complexity" can be interpreted as a developmental morphospace constraining the evolution of a discrete and finite set of computational phenotypes. 59 p, 1.8 MB Computational phenotypes : where the theory of computation meets evo-devo / Balari, Sergio (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Filologia Catalana) ; Lorenzo González, Guillermo
This article argues that the Chomsky Hierarchy can be reinterpreted as a developmental morphospace constraining the evolution of a discrete and finite series of computational phenotypes. In doing so, the theory of Morphological Evolution as stated by Pere Alberch, a pioneering figure of Evo-Devo thinking, is adhered to.
