The aim of this paper is to explore the ways in which Jack Kerouac's The Dharma Bums (1959) is representive of the countercultural movements that challenged the North-American society of the 1950s; in order to detect and analyse the 'rebellious' elements of the novel and in order to see how these relate to and display the cultural tensions of that time, a socio-historical contextualization of the text will be established (along with the main theoretical ideas that will serve as the basis of the analysis).
