Veterinary Mycology Group

The group of Veterinary Mycology of the UAB is a recognised research group by the Government of Catalonia. The group focuses on the study of fungi as causative agents of pathological processes related to infectious diseases and mycotoxicosis that can affect both animals and humans. The interest lies in the importance of identifying the agents of mycotoxins to control the presence of mycotoxins in food and feedstuffs. For the study of fungal infection in animals, they want to know the aetiology of such diseases which are in some cases frequent zoonoses.

Mitogenomes are essential due to their contribution to cell respiration. Recently they have also been implicated in fungal pathogenicity mechanisms. Members of the basidiomycetous yeast genus Malassezia are an important fungal component of the human skin microbiome, linked to various skin diseases, bloodstream infections, and they are increasingly implicated in gut diseases and certain cancers. Trichophyton erinacei is a main cause of dermatophytosis in hedgehogs and is increasingly reported from human infections worldwide. This pathogen was originally described in the European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) but is also frequently found in the African four-toed hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris), a popular pet animal worldwide. Aspergillus carbonarius consistently produces large amounts of ochratoxin A (OTA), a mycotoxin with nephrotoxic effects on animals and humans. In the present study, we analyzed the transcriptional changes associated to OTA production in three atypical non-ochratoxigenic strains of A. [...]
