ACCEDES Project presents the publication “University and Vulnerable Groups” in full open access.

The university access and remaining it’s still failing, for now, in offering the same opportunities for all of the citizens who wants to get a higher education degree. The reasons are economic, gender, cultural, and social. These particularities punish in a significant way certain groups, who see lessened their possibilities in their development and social and personal promotion. The Utopia of having a university more inclusive it’s still being a challenge for these institutions.

This publication, that complements other previously published about the topic, (http://accelera.uab.cat/documents_edo/biblio/), gathers the most significant contributions that were presented at “University and Vulnerable Groups” Congress 2014, celebrated in Veracruz the past 29th and 30th of October. The congress was promoted by ACCEDES Project (http://edo.uab.cat/accedes) and it was a place to present and discuss the results of the research developed during 3 years, as well as an opportunity for meeting other projects and significant experiences related to the topic.

The purpose of this publication isn’t gather general contributions about inclusive university but focus in concrete proposals centered to a certain vulnerable group that can be found in higher education institutions such as aboriginals, women, disabled, minorities, not common students, rural students, migrants and people with low Human Development Index (HDI). Another strong point of this book is the clear practical aspect for being centered in strategies, resources and experiences related to the vulnerable groups identified.

In sum, the idea is to support the development of an institution that wants to promote inclusion for all of their students and, specially, for those who are in a vulnerable situation and could reveal the ability or inability of the university system with the purpose of find the balance between quality and equity.

ACCEDES Project, fund by European Union as a part of ALFA project, reaches the purpose linked to the development of some tools that might help to the organizational development of the Higher Education Institutions, applying improvements in access, academic excellence and success of vulnerable groups. The content of this book will help to pursue this development, and contributes to promoting inclusion in higher education.
