Aquest mòdul consta de dues parts: 1. Política i emocions Les emocions són un aspecte penetrant, inevitable i polèmic de la vida política. Es pot veure com un factor clau que contribueix a la millora de l'ordre polític o com a causa fonamental d'inestabilitat i desordre. En el primer cas, els filòsofs han intentat identificar explícitament quines són les emocions més adequades per a les seves finalitats polítiques i quins són els mitjans adequats perquè els polítics, les autoritats i els governs les promoguin; en el segon cas, els intents s'han centrat en com mantenir-les sota control o com evitar el seu impacte negatiu en l'ordre polític. Aquesta part del curs es compromet a l'examen crític de l'enfocament liberal de Nussbaum sobre la naturalesa i la funció política de les emocions humanes. Presentarem els punts principals de la seva teoria, intentant situar-los en un context filosòfic més ampli, i identificarem i discutirem els seus problemes destacats. 2. Republicanisme En aquesta part de l'assignatura, presentarem i examinarem la teoria republicana de la llibertat i la política, i la contrastarem amb els marcs liberals i comunitaris. Llegirem i comentarem els punts principals de la teoria de Philip Pettit en Republicanism. A Theory of Freedom and Government i en On the People's Terms. A Republican Theory and Model of Democracy. |

This subject has two parts: 1. Politics and Emotions Emotions are a pervasive, unavoidable and controversial aspect of political life. They can be seen either as a key factor contributing to the betterment of the political order or as a fundamental cause of instability and disorder. In the first case, philosophers have tried to explicitly identify which if any are the emotions best suited for their political purposes and which are the adequate means for politicians, authorities and governments to promote them; in the second case, the attempts have been focused on how to keep them under control or how to avoid their negative impact on the political order. This part of the course will be committed to the critical examination of Nussbaum's liberal approach to the nature and political function of human emotions. We will present the main points of her theory, trying to set them within a broader philosophical context, and we will identify and discuss its salient problems. 2. Republicanism In this part of the subject, we will present and examine the republican theory of freedom and politics, and we will contrast it with the liberal and communitarian frameworks. We will read and comment the main points of Philip Pettit's theory from Republicanism. A Theory of Freedom and Government and On the People's Terms. A Republican Theory and Model of Democracy. |
