Resum: Contemporary media arts are examined in the context of current forms of representation, mediation, and storage of knowledge. If we understand art not as a system of visualizing what we already know, but in its capacity to generate new knowledge, then we realize that the arts can participate in the active production of knowledge and knowledge systems. Creative works then turn out to be more than seismographic registers of changing frames of experience and their symbolic representation. They are, by contrast, able to contribute to the development, experimental exploration, and practical evaluation of those frameworks. Beyond the limits of the fine arts, creative practices -as techné and aisthesis in the true sense of these words- are operating nowadays in the same fields that are being explored by within fields/disciplines of academic knowledge. Taking media arts as an example, this paper focuses on the critical interrelationship between scientific and artistic modes of thinking about gene technologies.
