This article discusses the last edited book of Umberto Eco (2003) and examines the process of translation -considering it as one of the items of interpretation. Eco inserts this activity among the different items of possible interpretations. Particularly, he distinguishes items of transpositions among semiotic systems or expressive substances (from book to screen, from music to cartoon, from performance to novel, etc), going back to Jakobson. Eco uses the theory of Peirce and Peirce's interpretant concept in order to argue against the common use of spreading the notion of translation to every transformation and every interpretation. Moreover he presents a general typology of interpretations and transpositions in which, partially modifying his same general theory, the pragmatic aspect of the linguistic interpretation is of less importance than the fact that interpretation is an activity which produces, as a result, the clarification and the modification of the interpreted. Eco bases his analysis on the notion of "negotiation", which substitutes and blends many notions that have been, till now, the basis of this semiotic theory -as for example, interpretative cooperation, ontological resistance, cultural codification, community approval, or pragmatics. Eco modifies parts of his theory of the last twenty years, but he re-examines criteria and principles in his analysis. |
