De mendacio y Contra mendacium son las dos obras en las que S. Agustín estudia la mentira de un modo sistemático. En ellas se abordan los aspectos filosóficos y éticos en los que se centra este pequeño ensayo. Agustín ve en la mentira la incompatibilidad entre aquello que se sabe o se piensa en lo profundo del alma y aquello que se externaliza mediante signos de lo que se sabe o se piensa. Es, por lo demás, evidente en San Agustín una neta distinción ente la falsedad y la mentira (esta última caracterizada por la intencionalidad) proponiendo una tipología diversificada según su gravedad decreciente. |

De mendacio and Contra mendacium are the two works in which Saint Augustine studies the lie in a systematic way. In them he refects upon the philosophical and ethical aspects on which we will focus here. Augustine sees the lie as an incompatibility between what is known or thought in the deepest of the soul and what is externalised through signs of what is thought or known. Moreover, it is clear that in St. Augustine there is an evident distinction between falsehood and lie (this last one characterised by intentionality), proposing a diversified typology in a decreasing scale of gravity. |
