Un viaje por las traducciones españolas de los libros de viaje científicos : el caso de The Malay Archipelago, de A. R. Wallace

Abstract:	Este artículo explora desde la traductología una de las obras más célebres del insigne científico británico A. R. Wallace, coautor de la teoría de la evolución por selección natural: The Malay Archipelago. Asimismo compara las distintas traducciones (versiones de la obra) editadas en España prestando particular atención a algunos de los paratextos incluidos en la obra (dedicatoria, prólogo del autor, notas del autor, ilustraciones y apéndice). Finalmente, indaga acerca de la mediación de una traducción francesa sobre esa primera traslación al castellano de la obra y también sobre la influencia que ésta, una traducción decimonónica reducida, pudo ejercer sobre posteriores versiones del texto en nuestro idioma. A modo de introducción, se ofrecen datos de la recepción del autor y su obra en España.
Abstract:	In this article we explore The Malay Archipelago (1869), one of the most popular works by the eminent British scientist A. R. Wallace, credited coauthor of the theory of evolution. By focusing mainly on the authorial paratexts provided by the writer (book dedication, authorial preface, author's notes, illustrations and appendix), we compare the different translations of the text edited in Spain. We explore and speculate about the mediation and influence of an earlier translation into French of the text on the various subsequent Spanish versions. Additionally, we also provide information about the reception of the author and his work.
