O presente texto tem como objetivo o estudo analítico das ideias e práticas sobre educação higiênica que circularam em Portugal e na América portuguesa no século XVIII, com um recorte centrado no tema da higiene pessoal. A partir de um questionamento do imaginário de uma população tida como carente de hábitos higiênicos, procurou-se então realizar um estudo analítico de fontes históricas relevantes, tais como o Tratado da conservação da saúde dos povos, de António Nunes Ribeiro Sanches, integrando-o a dados relativos à higiene em geral. Partiu-se do pressuposto que o conhecimento circulava por meio de livros impressos e na língua vernácula, ao mesmo tempo que ocorria a movimentação de pessoas e de materiais. Verificou-se que já havia um interesse pelo tema do asseio corporal no século XVIII, evidenciado pela publicação e circulação de livros, bem como por suas práticas. Esta pesquisa soma-se a outros estudos sobre saúde e higiene, oferecendo por sua vez um recorte centrado no tema da higiene pessoal em um contexto do século XVIII, período importante que anuncia um caminho para as práticas atuais. |

The objective of this paper was to study the ideas and practices on hygiene education that circulated in Portugal and Portuguese America during the 18th century, focusing on the theme of personal hygiene. Based on a questioning of the imaginary of a population that was considered lacking in hygienic habits, we conducted an analytical study of relevant historical sources such as the Tratado da conservação da saúde dos povos [Treaty on the conservation of peoples' health] by António Nunes Ribeiro Sanches, integrating it with data on hygiene in general. We started from the assumption that knowledge circulated through printed books and in the vernacular language simultaneously with the movement of people and materials. We found that the theme of personal hygiene had already attracted interest in the 18th Century, shown by the publication and circulation of books and by evidence of hygiene practices. This research adds to other studies on health and hygiene, offering a focus on the theme of personal hygiene in the context of the 18th Century, an important period that signaled a path towards current practices. |
