Abstract: This dissertation deals with the representation of Victorian psychiatric discourse in Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace (1996). The analysis focuses on the figure of Dr. Simon Jordan, Atwood’s fictional addition to the real-life events in which the novel is based, as a representative of this discourse. His embodiment of the Victorian ideal of the gentleman and the man of science are used to analyse how ideals of masculinity and femininity as well as his medical gaze impact this character’s perception of Grace Marks, the convicted murderess he conducts a psychological study about. The discussion focuses on the gradual collapse of his rational perspective and the destabilization of cultural frameworks as a historiographic metafiction novel.
