Resum: Satsuma domain in southern Kyushu had one of the most elaborate and tightly-regulated systems of social organization in Tokugawa Japan. Satsuma was furthermore unique among the domains of the Tokugawa period because it could claim control over foreign territories and people groups, having conquered the kingdom of Ryukyu in 1609, acquiring control over the Amami Islands in the process, and because it maintained communities of Korean potters within its territories, who had been captured during the Imjin War of 1592–1598. The following pages examine the ways in which foreigners were incorporated into the status system of Satsuma between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries.
