This paper deals with the set of devices to mention death attested in the extant funerary epigramms by Anyte from Tegea. The analysis phocuses on (i) formal procedures to mention death; (ii) the implied content of the mentions (when relevant); and (iii) the imagery of death; the evolution of each factor from early epigramms (both literary and inscriptional) up to Anyte' s time is considered. The analysis makes it possible (i) to put forward a typology both of the procedure of the reference and of the images used, stating the relevant parameters; (ii) to state some of the principles underlying the attested devices of reference to death; (iii) to highlight the stylistic relevance of these devices, both generally, and in Anyte's extant work; (iv) to achieve a panoramic view of the evolution of the genre. |
