Fernando de Herrera dedica a Tomás Moro, canciller de Enrique VIII de Inglaterra y defensor de la Iglesia, una biografía al parecer muy heterogénea, una veces detallada, otras más bien general. El texto se sitúa entre los géneros de la historiografía y de la hagiografía, disponiendo la vida del protagonista en forma semidramática, como en un «Teatro de la Tragedia». La narración exacta de los hechos históricos y los largos comentarios morales se combinan de tal manera que resulta un texto literario muy especial: exhorta el lector a la imitación del mártir, sin abandonar la elaboración estética. Historiografía y literatura se revelan gemelas una vez más. |

Fernando de Herrera, an important humanist and poet of 17th-century Seville, narrates the martyrdom of another humanist, Sir Thomas More, Lord Chancellor of England and advocate of the Catholic Church, in a seemingly very heterogeneous biography -at some points very detailed, at others quite general- which lies somewhere between history and hagiography, presenting More's life in a semi-dramatic way, as a «Theatre of Tragedy». The accurate narration of the historical facts and the abundant moral commentaries combine to produce a very special kind of text, exhorting the reader to imitate the martyr, but without in any way sacrificing aesthetic considerations. Once again, historiography and literature go hand in hand. |
