16 p, 659.0 KB Water-level fluctuations and metapopulation dynamics as drivers of genetic diversity in populations of three Tanganyikan cichlid fish species / Nevado, Bruno (Centre de Recerca en Agrigenòmica) ; Mautner, S. (Department of Zoology, Karl-Franzens-University Graz) ; Sturmbauer, C. (Department of Zoology, Karl-Franzens-University Graz) ; Verheyen, E. (Evolutionary Ecology Group, University of Antwerp) ; Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
Understanding how genetic variation is generated and maintained in natural populations, and how this process unfolds in a changing environment, remains a central issue in biological research. In this work, we analysed patterns of genetic diversity from several populations of three cichlid species from Lake Tanganyika in parallel, using the mitochondrial DNA control region. [...]

(Yüzüncü Yıl University (Turquia). Institute of Science) ; Üner, S. (Yüzüncü Yıl University (Turquia). Department of Geological Engineering)
The Eastern Anatolian Plateau emerges from the continental collision between Arabian and Eurasian plates where intense seismicity related to the ongoing convergence characterizes the southern part of the plateau. [...]

20 p, 2.2 MB Spatial patterns reveal strong abiotic and biotic drivers of zooplankton community composition in Lake My'vatn, Iceland / Bartrons Vilamala, Mireia (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Einarsson, Árni (University of Iceland) ; Nobre, Regina L. G. (Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte) ; Herren, Cristina M. (University of Wisconsin-Madison) ; Webert, Kyle C. (University of Wisconsin-Madison) ; Brucet, Sandra (Aarhus Universitet) ; Ólafsdóttir, Sólveig R. (Hafrannsóknastofnun) ; Ives, Anthony R. (University of Wisconsin-Madison)
Spatial patterns in the abundance of species are determined by local abiotic and biotic conditions, and by the movement of individuals among localities. For species distributed among discrete habitat "islands", such as zooplankton distributed among lakes, local conditions within lakes often dominate low movement rates among lakes to determine the composition of communities. 30 p, 946.3 KB Combined ecological risks of nitrogen and phosphorus in European freshwaters / Azevedo, Ligia B. (Institute for Water and Wetland Research) ; Zelm, Rosalie van (Institute for Water and Wetland Research) ; Leuven, Rob S. E. W. (Institute for Water and Wetland Research) ; Hendriks, A. Jan (Institute for Water and Wetland Research) ; Huijbregts, Mark A. J. (Institute for Water and Wetland Research)
Eutrophication is a key water quality issue triggered by increasing nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) levels and potentially posing risks to freshwater biota. We predicted the probability that an invertebrate species within a community assemblage becomes absent due to nutrient stress as the ecological risk (ER) for European lakes and streams subjected to N and P pollution from 1985 to 2011. 18 p, 1.8 MB Distribution, morphology and habitats of saline wetlands : a case study from Monegros, Spain / Castañeda, C. (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (Espanya). Estación Experimental de Aula Dei) ; Herrero, Juan (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (Espanya). Estación Experimental de Aula Dei) ; Conesa, Josep Antoni (Universitat de Lleida. Departament d'Hortofructicultura, Botànica i Jardineria)
Wetlands in semiarid regions have received less attention than wetlands in humidtemperate areas, and the limited amount of information has resulted in little regulatory recognition. A comprehensive map of the saline wetlands that occur in karstic depressions in the semiarid region of Monegros, NE Spain, was developed from historical data, topography, and surveys of vascular flora. 16 p, 1.1 MB Depositional models of lacustrine evaporites in the SE margin of the Ebro Basin (Paleogene, NE Spain) / Ortí, F. (Universitat de Barcelona. Departament de Geoquímica, Petrologia i Prospecció Geològica) ; Rosell Ortíz, Laura (Universitat de Barcelona. Departament de Geoquímica, Petrologia i Prospecció Geològica) ; Inglès i Urpinell, Montserrat (Universitat de Barcelona. Departament de Geoquímica, Petrologia i Prospecció Geològica) ; Playà i Pous, Elisabet (Universitat de Barcelona. Departament de Geoquímica, Petrologia i Prospecció Geològica)
An important evaporitic sedimentation occurred during the Paleogene (Eocene to lower Oligocene) in the Barberà sector of the southeastern margin of the Tertiary Ebro Basin. This sedimentation took place in shallow lacustrine environments and was controlled by a number of factors: 1) the tectonic structuration of the margin; 2) the high calcium sulphate content in the meteoric waters coming from the marginal reliefs; 3) the semiarid climate; and 4) the development of large alluvial fans along the basin margin, which also conditioned the location of the saline lakes. Grupo de Evaluación y Manejo de Recursos Ícticos) ; Rosso, Juan José (Universidad de Buenos Aires. Centro de Estudios Transdisciplinarios del Agua (CETA)) ; Quirós, Rolando (Universidad de Buenos Aires. Departamento de Producción Animal)
Trophic interactions in shallow lakes of the Pampa plain (Argentina) and their effects on water transparency during two cold seasons of contrasting fish abundance Trophic cascade interactions in shallow lakes have been studied extensively in the north temperate region mainly during the summer periodo However, fewer studies have examined these interactions in warrner regions during the winter periodo The aim of the present work was to study trophic cascade interactions and their effect on water transparency in small lakes in the Pampean Plain (Argentina) during the cold season. [...]

Until recently, small continental waters have been completely ignored in virtually all global processes and cycles. This has resulted from the neglect of these systems and processes by ecologists and the assumption that ecosystems with a small areal extent cannot play a major role in global processes. [...]
