Group on Interactive Coding of Images (GICI)

The Group on Interactive Coding of Images (GICI) focuses on the study, design and implementation of image coding and transmission techniques and standards.

GICI collaborates with other national and international research groups and is open to new collaborations with other researchers. Students can also do their Master and Ph.D. theses with us.

GICI belongs to the Department of Information and Communications Engineering (DEIC) at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). Our research

The GICI group continuously struggles to push the state of the art of image coding and transmission. As a result, research papers and software tools are published. The main lines of research that are currently being developed are the following:

Dual link image coding for earth observation satellites / Aulí Llinàs, Francesc (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament d'Enginyeria de la Informació i de les Comunicacions) ; Marcellin, Michael W. (University of Arizona. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) ; Sánchez, Victor (University of Warwick. Department of Computer Science) ; Bartrina Rapesta, Joan (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament d'Enginyeria de la Informació i de les Comunicacions) ; Hernandez-Cabronero, Miguel (University of Arizona. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering)
The conventional strategy to download images captured by satellites is to compress the data on board and then transmit them via the downlink. It often happens that the capacity of the downlink is too small to accommodate all the acquired data, so the images are trimmed and/or transmitted through lossy regimes. [...]

Departament d'Enginyeria de la Informació i de les Comunicacions)
This article extends a rate-allocation method based on the near-lossless-rate (NLR) complexity that is designed to operate on-board spacecrafts, to include support for distortion scaling factors, such as those that are needed to code multi- and hyperspectral image when a spectral transform is employed.
