Abstract in English:

In this study we focus on the discourse relation Background, and how English adverbial ing-participles, from which a Background relation can be inferred, are restructured in German and Norwegian attested translation to secure the same discourse relational potential. German participial adjuncts are generally not tolerated in final position, and Norwegian participial adjuncts are restricted with regard to modification. We show how translators use positional and structural changes – rendering the backgrounded information as the first conjunct of a VP-coordination, a reduced non-propositional structure or in a separate sentenbce – to retain the discourse structural interpretation of the English original.
