The Technological Institute of Costa Rica (TEC) is an autonomous higher education university dedicated to teaching and research and expanding technology and sciences associated with the development of Costa Rica sciences. It was created by Law No. 4777, June 10th, 1971.
It was officially declared "a distinguished Costa Rican institution which specialises in education, culture and technology" on September 14th, 2012, as part of the celebrations held by the Governing Council in the Plaza Mayor of the city of Cartago.
The Central Campus is located in the city of Cartago, it has a surface area of ​​over 90 hectares and 105,000 square metres of buildings, accommodating classrooms, laboratories, research centres, sports and cultural facilities, auditoria, offices, small restaurants and dining rooms, libraries, experimental sites, shops and bookstores which the TEC makes available for students, staff and the local communities.
TEC is part of the National Council of Deans (CONARE), a body that coordinates planning and quality control processes as well as academic projects managed by state universities.
TEC currently offers 11 technical vocational training courses, 22 baccalaureate diplomas, undergraduate and engineering degrees, 15 master's degrees and 3 PhD courses.
TEC's mission is "to contribute to the overall development of the country through training of human resources, research and expansion; maintaining scientific, technological and technical leadership, academic excellence and strict adherence to ethical, humanistic and environmental standards, from a quality and competitive state university perspective at both a national and international level."
