Resumen: The paper presented here correspond an analysis of students' beliefs about their abilities in the educational environment. We get a sample of around 2. 000 students studying 4th ESO (last year of compulsory education in Spain) in 2013-14 in Barcelona. Self-rated ability is a central factor in the definition of the individual's beliefs. It indirectly define the perceived chances of success for each option so it has a direct effect on educational choices. The analysis model is proposed to account for a possible mechanism by linking social background (both educational and occupational) with self-rated abilities and expected results, controlling for various factors such as gender, school and their own objective abilities as a student, assessed through the Catalan Basic Skills Tests. The results show that actually beliefs about their abilities are slightly different among individuals from different social backgrounds. Although the self-rating is quite close to its real or objective abilities, there are a systematic bias due to social background. Students from lower social background, but with higher abilities, underestimate them. Although we do not find a determinant relationship, is new evidence to consider a mechanism that may be able to explain part of educational inequalities between social groups. It set different political and pedagogical challenges when assessing abilities and encouraging students and their beliefs.
