Abstract: Plutarch compared the reforming Roman politicians who were the brothers Gracchi to the Spartan kings Agis and Cleomenes, the former a member of the Euypontid dynasty, the latter of the Agiad. However, an attentive reading of their biographies, reveals that their reform movements’ aim was the increase in the power of their respective dynasties and the corresponding enfeeblement of the other one. In any case, Agis was unable to consumate the reforms he proposed while, Cleomenes, who was the one that abolished debts, shared the land and increased the citizen body, failed in his attempt at making of Sparta a Hellenistic power for, in spite of his inital success in the Peloponese against the Achaean Confederacy, he was irremediably defeated by Antigonus Doson in Sellasia because, I propose, of lack of soldiers.
