Cet article étudie la figure fictionnelle du traducteur dans le film de science-fiction réalisé par Denis Villeneuve, Premier contact (Arrival, 2016), adapté d'une nouvelle de Ted Chiang ("L'histoire de ta vie", "Story of Your Life"). L'oeuvre redéfinit le statut du traducteur comme une figure véritablement essentielle dans le cas d'une première rencontre avec une altérité extraterrestre. La communication interplanétaire est décrite comme un processus particulièrement long et compliqué pour éviter toute mauvaise interprétation ; le personnage de Louise Banks va à l'encontre des stéréotypes habituels du métier et le traducteur devient un vaisseau indispensable pour faire la jonction entre deux langues, deux cultures et deux espèces. |

This article focuses on the fictional image of the translator in the science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve, Arrival (2016), based on a short story by Ted Chiang ("Story of Your Life"). The film redefines the translator status in fiction works as an essential character during a first human-extraterrestrial encounter. The analysis of both works shows some key features in the rewriting of the translator image : the interplanetary communication is described as a very long and complex process; the character of Louise Banks removes all the stereotypes associated to the profession of translation and finally, the translator becomes an essential vessel to bridge two languages, two cultures and two species. |
