Additional title: The Impossible Awakening : Death as Sleep and Post-Mortem Consciousness in Edgar Allan Poe's Poetry
Date: 2026
Abstract: This article analyzes "Spirits of the Dead" as an early and clear formulation of a central motif in Edgar Allan Poe's poetry: the persistence of consciousness beyond death. Within a framework that understands the fantastic as the irruption of the supernatural into a recognizable world, the study links desire and mourning to the female figure and considers the tomb as a perceptual threshold. It engages "The Colloquy of Monos and Una" to clarify sensory continuity after death and reads "Annabel Lee" and "The Sleeper" as lyrical variants of death-as-sleep. The article concludes that the poem stages a post-mortem voice confined to interiority, while nature and landscape sustain fantastic ambiguity and leave open the prospect of an impossible awakening.
