Easy Language, also known as Easy-to-Read, is a simplified language variety that aims to facilitate reading and language comprehension that can be applied to written, oral and multimodal content. It follows specific recommendations regarding wording, structure, design, and evaluation (AENOR 2018; ISO 2023). In this paper, we will report on the results of a corpus study of two Catalan guides, one in standard Catalan (from the Museu Memorial de l’Exili) and the other in Easy Language Catalan (from the Museu d’Història de Catalunya). The former uses standard Catalan and are addressed to the general public, while the latter are written and validated in Easy Language. We have performed a morphosyntactic, lexical, and manual analysis of the subcorpora. The parameters considered were average sentence length, mean verb per sentence, parts-of-speech distribution, corpus aboutness, frequency of –ment adverbs, word length, lexical diversity, vocabulary richness, information load, and two readability indexes: the Gunning Fog Index and the Flesch-Szigriszt Index. The analysis aims to study the linguistic complexity and readability of written museum guides in standard Catalan, using the guide from the Museu Memorial de l’Exili as a case study and to identify the differences in approach between standard guides and the simplified versions using Easy Language. |
