24 p, 416.6 KB The politics of educational success : a realist evaluation of early school leaving policies in Catalonia (Spain) / Tarabini-Castellani, Aina (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Sociologia) ; Parcerisa, Lluís (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Sociologia) ; Curran, Marta (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Sociologia) ; Montes Ruiz, Alejandro (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Sociologia)
The objective of the article is to examine what is 'taken for granted' in the policies designed to combat Early School Leaving (ESL) in Catalonia, identifying their implicit ontologies, causal assumptions and logics of action. [...]

(Institut d'Investigació Biomèdica Sant Pau) ; Daban, Ferran (Universitat Pompeu Fabra) ; Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
Prioritizing corresponds to the process of selecting and managing health needs identified after diagnosing the community's health needs and assets. Recently, the health needs assessment has been reinforced with the community perspective, providing multiple benefits: it sensitizes and empowers the community about their health, encourages mutual support among its members and promotes their importance by making them responsible for the process of improving their own reality. Children are particularly vulnerable to the health effects of secondhand smoke (SHS). The objectives of this study are to describe SHS exposure of children younger than 12 years in Spain and to identify potential social inequalities associated with SHS exposure. [...]

Breast cancer is a challenge for women's health-related quality of life (QoL), compromising their physical health and emotional well-being. QoL is equally distributed among different social groups. The aim of this study to analyze the impact of clinical characteristics and social determinants of health on the QoL of a cohort of women diagnosed and/or treated for breast cancer between 2003 and 2013 in one of the main hospitals in Barcelona's public health network. We explore a natural generalization of systolic geometry to Finsler metrics and optical hypersurfaces with special emphasis on its relation to the Mahler conjecture and the geometry of numbers. In particular, we show that if an optical hypersurface of contact type in the cotangent bundle of the 2-dimensional torus encloses a volume V, then it carries a periodic characteristic whose action is at most V/3. We prove that any Riemannian two-sphere having area at most 1 can be continuously mapped onto a tree in such a way that the topology of the fibers is controlled and their length is less than 7. 6. This result improves previous estimates and relies on a similar statement for Riemannian two-disks.

In the context of increasingly salient economic disparities between member states, this article tests the novel theoretical claim that perceptions of inequality between European Union (EU) member states diminish citizens' trust in European institutions. [...]

22 p, 506.0 KB Contact geometry and isosystolic inequalities / Alvarez Paiva, Juan Carlos (Université de Lille. Laboratoire Paul Painlevé) ; Balacheff, Florent Nicolas (Université de Lille. Laboratoire Paul Painlevé)
A long-standing open problem asks whether a Riemannian metric on the real projective space with the same volume as the canonical metric carries a periodic geodesic whose length is at most π. A contact-geometric reformulation of systolic geometry and the use of canonical perturbation theory allow us to solve a parametric version of this problem: if g s is a smooth, constant-volume deformation of the canonical metric that is not formally trivial, the length of the shortest periodic geodesic of the metric g s attains π as a strict local maximum at s = 0. Comparative analysis of four case studies in neighbourhoods of Barcelona / Barbieri, Nicolás (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) ; Gallego, Raquel (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) ; Morales Morales, Ernesto (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) ; Muñoz Mendoza, Carolina Alejandra (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) ; Quintana Terés, Bernat (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona)
In a context of welfare austerity and growing inequalities many citizens ask for public sector reforms in the health sector and for community action as a relevant practice. However, analyses of community action for health are still limited to single actions. [...]

In this article we explore the relationship between the systole and the diameter of closed hyperbolic orientable surfaces. We show that they satisfy a certain inequality, which can be used to deduce that their ratio has a (genus-dependent) upper bound.
