[...] The Middle Ages discovered the aesthetic potency of the symbol as an icon of beauty and ugliness. This theory led John Scotus Eriugena and Hugh of Saint Victor to the aesthetic symbolism that asserts the beauty of the world as a symbol of the beauty of God, and to the metaphysical symbolism, when the corporeal world is a symbol of God.
[...] This study presents articles of Pompeu Gener that help to determine the genesis of several books of his -above all Literaturas malsanas (1894)- or complement them. Gener, that had already criticized Zola's naturalism in French and Hispanic publications, began a campaign in Madrid and Barcelona against it from 1887, which was intensified after the reactions that La terre aroused and with the rise of several end of century's tendencies (in special, psychologism, which led him to revalue Stendhal and some aspects of Paul Bourget), although he disapproved also of them, more distant from their principles.
Throughout history, architecture has been used by the power holders as a symbolic reflection of it. In this way, the pharaohs of Egypt built great pyramids, in the Middle Ages the ecclesiastical power manifested itself in the construction of cathedrals, the nobility magnified their existence with the building of palaces and the states built (and built) superb buildings to house your instalations.
