Institut de Neurociències (INc)

In 2003 molecular biologists, physiologists, biochemists, pharmacologists, neuropathologists, histochemists, psychologists, psychobiologists and bioinformatics working at the UAB created the INc with the main strategic goal of leaving traditional disciplines behind, and engaging in a multidisciplinary and translational approach to key issues about the brain in the XXI century: neurodegeneration, neuroregeneration, and the underpinnings of the normal and disturbed mind. We are interested in how the normal brain works, what happens when it gets sick, and how to cure it. We explore all levels of biological organization from the interaction among single molecules to complex behaviours using cell cultures, animal models and human patients. And we aim at applying novel molecular, cellular, genetic and psychological therapies to brain pathology.

Microglial cells are crucial patrolling immune cells in the brain and pivotal contributors to neuroinflammation during pathogenic or degenerative stress. Microglia exhibit a heterogeneous "dendrite-like" dense morphology that is subject to change depending on inflammatory status. [...]

Background/Objectives: Chronic traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) causes persistent neurological deficits for which no clinically effective regenerative therapy is currently available. Mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs), particularly Wharton's jelly-derived MSCs (WJ-MSCs), demonstrate immunomodulatory and neurotrophic potential. [...]

Inflammatory-oxidative stress generated by immune cells plays an important role in aging and in age-related neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Triple-transgenic mice for AD (3xTg-AD) are a suitable model for mimicking this disease in an age-dependent manner. [...]

Cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) can enter cells without inducing cytotoxicity and can be coupled with cargo molecules to be used to deliver drugs, DNA, or nanoparticles into cells. The peptide-membrane interactions driving the internalization mechanism are not completely understood. [...]

Background/Objectives: Homeostatic (nervous, immune and endocrine) systems and their communications network are crucial for health and aging rate. We previously reported behavioral and peritoneal leukocyte function alterations and oxidative-inflammatory stress in young female triple-transgenic (3xTg) mice for Alzheimer's disease (AD). [...]

According to contemporary psycho- and physiological perspectives, the brain supports our experience of the world by constantly anticipating what may happen next. In this context, limbic mesocortical areas have been proposed to play a key domain-general role in cortical processing, holding highly abstract content that may be efficiently broadcasted to virtually the whole brain, ultimately integrating interoception into a unified field of experience from the point of view of someone who has a body.
