Traditionally, when reflecting of the translation process, metaphors such as TRANSFER, CHANGE or IMITATION are used. Several studies have shown that these metaphors are something more than just a "way of saying". On the one hand, they shape the conept of translation of a specific social group or translation theory; on the other, they serve to structure and express individual translaltors' knowledge. In this chapter we discuss our analysis of the metaphoric expressions used by students to describe the translation process, giving some examples, and present our conclusions concerning conceptual changes in student's subjective theories of translation as a result of formal learning.
