Resum: China's breath-taking economic growth over the last twenty-five years has transformed the country into a great power and this has become one of the main topics of our time. Broadcasters from all over the world have demonstrated their interest in reporting on the nature of current bonds between China and the West, and news on China flood television screens almost everywhere in Europe. But EU-China contacts are not a new phenomenon and images of the East have dominated western thought and culture throughout history. Recent and former researches have approached the representation of China in Europe from many perspectives, but little has been said about how Chinese culture has traditionally been depicted in audiovisual media and analysis of documentary films is particularly scarce. Drawing upon the framing theory, this thesis analyses all documentary films broadcasted on British television channels from 2010 to 2012, looking for old and new patterns of representation. It is argued that images of China in the West have suffered constant ups and downs and that this chronological trend is also notable in the audio-visual field. The evident alternation of positive and negative images has affected how China is understood in the West and the results of this investigation show that recurrent ideas are recorded. An in-depth quantitative and qualitative content analysis has revealed the permanence of the conception of China as Europe's antithesis, the homogeneous and immutable nature of the country and its history, its threatening attitude towards the West and the exoticism of its culture, among other topics. Furthermore, new approaches and new values attributed to China have been identified too, such as the idea of China as the workshop of the world, its new leading role in the international arena, the importance of social unrest and state control inside the country, etc. The results show that British documentaries basically explore the negative aspects of this new situation and, although references concerning the advantages of the new positioning of China exist, criticism of its development model ostensibly prevails. This dissertation has identified the frames with which recent British documentary productions make an impact on audiences in the UK, maintaining recurrent ideas of China present in western thought and culture throughout history and giving new values to this emerging superpower in the East. More than ever before our understanding of China is of crucial importance today, and the results of this PhD dissertation show how certain media practices can hinder the path to mutual comprehension.
