Resum: This thesis studied the availability and price of animal-welfare certified pork sold under the house label in major supermarket chains in the province of Barcelona, Spain. The survey was carried out in January-April 2023 in 12 different chains. Information was collected on product description, brand, certification, weight, and price. All supermarkets surveyed had some animal welfare policy. However, these were implemented for packaged fresh pork to a variable extent. Bonarea and Bonpreu had 100% of their house label pork (processed and unprocessed) animal-welfare certified, while Mercadona none. WELFAIR® and IAWS were the only animal welfare certifications observed. IBAW and B+ were not detected. Two supermarkets, Carrefour and Alcampo, used private product quality indications linked to animal welfare. Animal welfare certification of fresh pork was related to pig breed, with Duroc and RAL being consistently certified. Certification of Iberic and white coated pork was variable. Fresh processed pork (minced pork, sausages) was less frequently certified than unprocessed pork, and the lesser (external) parts of the pork (trotters, cheek, etc. ) were less commonly certified than the prime cuts. The price comparison of animal welfare certified and non-certified packaged fresh pork across supermarkets suggests that animal welfare is not necessarily more expensive for the consumer. However, the enormous variety in the assortment and the size of the packaging, as well as price volatility made the comparison difficult. Further research on the problems and costs of adopting animal welfare standards along.
Resum: the production chain for the various pig breeds and pork products is recommended.
