Being an Arabic Language Teacher in Catalan Schools : A Case Study of the Arabic Language and Moroccan Culture (LACM) Program

The arrival of visiting teachers from Morocco in Catalan schools has made it possible for more than 10,000 pupils in schools to have the opportunity to learn their language and culture of origin. However, the implementation of educational programmes in languages of origin, such as Arabic, is subject to multiple interpretations regarding immigration education, which means that teachers sometimes experience complex situations as a result of existing cultural stereotypes. This article, the result of a case study, analyses the experience of a teacher in the Arabic Language and Moroccan Culture (LACM) programme during the course of a school year in a public school in Catalonia. The ethnographic approach used has also allowed for the incorporation of the voice of the entire educational community, including that of the students as the main beneficiaries of this programme. The results demonstrate the difficulties that exist not only in the implementation of the LACM programme in the classroom, but also the precarious work and personal situations that some of the Moroccan teachers working in schools and institutes in Catalonia have to deal with. The results advocate that an improvement in the LACM program would benefit the teaching team, and consequently, a higher quality in the implementation of this programme in the classrooms would be guaranteed, which would benefit the students. |
