We report the use of bis-catecholic polymers as candidates for obtaining effective, tunable gatekeeping coatings for mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) intended for drug release applications. In monomers, catechol rings act as adhesive moieties and reactive sites for polymerization, together with middle linkers which may be chosen to tune the physicochemical properties of the resulting coating. Texas Materials Institute) ; De La Mata, Maria (Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia) ; Arbiol i Cobos, Jordi (Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia) ; Korgel, Brian A. (University of Texas. Texas Materials Institute)
Colloidal nanorods with axial Si and Ge heterojunction segments were produced by solution-liquid-solid (SLS) growth using Sn as a seed metal and trisilane and diphenylgermane as Si and Ge reactants. The low solubility of Si and Ge in Sn helps to generate abrupt Si-Ge heterojunction interfaces. [...]

Nanowires are a versatile platform to investigate and harness phonon and thermal transport phenomena in nanoscale systems. With this perspective, we demonstrate herein the use of crystal phase and mass disorder as effective degrees of freedom to manipulate the behavior of phonons and control the flow of local heat in silicon nanowires. Ordered nanopillars have been used as a smart configuration to design and fabricate localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensors. Importantly, these nanostructures can be integrated within microfluidic channels as a novel opportunity to enhance the response of biosensors and also to control the fluid flow by modifying the wettability surface of the walls. In this work we study the effects of disorder on the thermal conductivity of porous 100 nm thick silicon membranes, in which the size, shape and position of the pores were varied randomly. Measurements using two-laser Raman thermometry on both non-patterned and porous membranes revealed more than a 10-fold reduction of the thermal conductivity compared to that of bulk silicon and a six-fold reduction compared to non-patterned membranes for the sample with random pore shapes. Arrays of silicon nanowires with height gradients fabricated using metal-assisted chemical etching act as tunable metamirrors enabling light focusing the reflected light in arbitrary shapes. Metamirrors with non-cylindrical nanowires can simultaneously focus the reflected light and induce strong polarization conversion effect.
