Center for Theoretical Linguistics (CLT)

The Center for Theoretical Linguistics (Centre de Lingüística Teòrica), funded and consolidated research group by the Generalitat de Catalunya from 1993, aims to fully understand how natural languages are structured and how they are processed by human beings. The focus of research is grammatical theory in a broad sense of the term, and the core research lines of the group are phonology and morphology, syntax (including lexical syntax), and semantics, always from a theoretical perspective. As for the transversal research areas, the group also counts on the participation of specialists in biolinguistics, language acquisition and language pathologies. Our research activity basically revolves around the study of the universal properties of language and the identification of patterns of microvariation among the natural languages.

This article aims to describe the behaviour of past participle agreement (PPA) in Majorcan Catalan, especially when the object is left in situ (in its canonical post-verbal position), in comparison with other Romance dialects. [...]

19 p, 4.9 MB Missing inflectional features and missing exponents in DP-internal agreement asymmetries / Bonet, Eulàlia (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Centre de Lingüística Teòrica)
This paper focuses on different types of agreement asymmetries within the DP in which postnominal modifiers exhibit full agreement while in prenominal modifiers agreement can fail in different ways. The main lines of the optimality-theoretic proposal in Bonet, Lloret & Mascaró (2015) are followed, but it is shown, through a comparison of two Northern Italian varieties, that their constraint set cannot account for varieties of Friulian, where the plural exponent fails to surface in plural contexts.
The goal of this note is to show the inadequacy of the meaning that has been attributed to the term syncretism in influential work in the Hispanic tradition. It is proposed that the term be restricted to paradigmatic relations, as it is usually done in other linguistic traditions, and to use.

This article argues that variation in how 3rd person clitic combinations are solved across Catalan varieties depends on the internal morphosyntactic shape of the dative clitic in each variety. We argue that the dative clitic in Valencian Catalan is an inherently case-marked pronominal form (KP), while non Valencian Catalan varieties, that contain a locative clitic, build the dative as a definite locative pronominal which receives structural case. The article compares the interpretation of singular topical nominals in Romance (Catalan) and Slavic (Russian), and its relation to the presence/absence of the article in the overt morphosyntax. The empirical study, presented in this paper, confirmed the theoretical prediction that in Catalan the presence of a definite article conveys uniqueness of the referent, while an indefinite article suggests nonuniqueness.
