Center of Theoretical Linguistics (CLT)

The Center of Theoretical Linguistics (Centre de Lingüística Teòrica), funded and consolidated research group by the Generalitat de Catalunya from 1993, aims to fully understand how natural languages are structured and how they are processed by human beings. The focus of research is grammatical theory in a broad sense of the term, and the core research lines of the group are phonology and morphology, syntax (including lexical syntax), and semantics, always from a theoretical perspective. As for the transversal research areas, the group also counts on the participation of specialists in biolinguistics, language acquisition and language pathologies. Our research activity basically revolves around the study of the universal properties of language and the identification of patterns of microvariation among the natural languages.

Bridging strength, monotonicity, and word order choices in Catalan / Brunetti, Lisa (Université de Paris) ; Mayol, Laia (Universitat Pompeu Fabra) ; Villalba, Xavier (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Filologia Catalana)
Three experimental studies are presented testing the choice of a left or a right dislocation in Catalan, depending on the bridging relation between the dislocate and its antecedent. We make the hypothesis that the stronger the anaphoric link between the dislocate and its antecedent, the more appropriate a right dislocation is, whereas the opposite is true for left dislocation. The goal of this article is to show that, unlike recent analyses of the qualitative binominal NP construction (QBNP) that idiot of a doctor/el idiota del médico, Spanish QBNPs require an analysis with the following features: (i) the definite article preceding the subject nominal is a fully-fledged determiner, (ii) the predicate-subject final word order is the consequence of predicate focus fronting, (iii) the subject receives background interpretation, and (iv) as a consequence of its interpretation as background, the subject of the construction must be specific, which explains the apparently syntactic restrictions on the size of the nominals occurring in this position. It is widely assumed that functional and dispositional properties are not identical to their physical base, but that there is some kind of asymmetrical ontological dependence between them. In this regard, a popular idea is that the former are realized by the latter, which, under the non-identity assumption, is generally understood to be a non-causal, constitutive relation. [...]
