This article aims to offer a personal approach to the phenomenon of subtitling, more specifically, electronic subtitling at film festivals and cinematheques. What are the main characteristics of this little-known audiovisual translation mode? Why is it so harshly criticized? The article examines some of the vulnerabilities of this kind of translation -which is often characterised as "vulnerable" or "exposed"- as well as the challenges and opportunities of a discipline so dependent on technological changes and on the effects of globalization.
