TransMedia Catalonia

TransMedia Catalonia is a research group that aims to research audiovisual translation (dubbing, subtitling, voice-over, etc.) and media accessibility (subtitling for the deaf and hard-of-hearing, respeaking, audio description, audio subtitling, sign language) in various genres, platforms and supports. After an initial period devoted to descriptive research, its focus is now mostly on empirical research and technological implementation. This is possible thanks to an interdisciplinary group which integrates researchers from various backgrounds.

TransMedia Catalonia was recognised in 2005 as an emerging group by the Catalan government (SGR2005/230) and has been a consolidated research group since 2009 (2009SGR700, 2014SGR27, 2017SGR113), linked to UAB's Department of Translation and Interpreting and East Asian Studies. It manages the Laboratory of Technologies Applied to Audiovisual Translation, which offers eye-tracking electrophysiological services.

Providing accessible audiovisual content which caters for diverse user needs is one of the challenges of today's digitized society. Easy-to-understand language, ranging from Easy Language (or Easy-to-Read) to Plain Language, has traditionally put the emphasis on written printed texts. However, in the last years a growing interest in how easy-to-understand language could be used in audiovisual media has developed. [...]
This workshop will be built upon a selection of video presentations created as part of the EASIT project (pagines. uab. cat/easit). The ultimate aim of the workshop is that participants gain a better understanding of the following aspects: What is easy-to-understand language? What is the difference between Easy-to-Read (or Easy Language) and Plain Language?, Who are the end users of easy-to-understand content? What are the basic rules of Easy-to-Understand Language?, Can we create easy-to-understand subtitles? How can we create easy-to-understand audio descriptions? Apart from the video presentations, we hope to engage in a lively discussion with workshop participants, who will be proposed some hands-on activities.

Could existing access services such as subtitling or audio description be made easier to understand? Could existing media access professionals expand their skills and provide new easy language services? What type of training should be offered? These three questions may be seen as the starting point of the EASIT (Easy Access for Social Inclusion Training) project, which aims to define the skills of these new professional profiles, propose a curriculum, and create training materials.
