L'assignatura "Història i Cultura dels Estats Units d'Amèrica" ofereix una introducció als esdeveniments històrics i socials més rellevants de la història d'aquest país des dels seus orígens colonials fins al 9/11, emfasitzant la producció cultural que s'esdevé de la unió entre la història i la societat en aquell país. L'assignatura fomenta l'anàlisi, el debat i la interpretació de la producció cultural dels Estats Units, fermament arrelada als esdeveniments que han contribuït a la construcció d'aquesta nació tal i com la coneixem avui. La formació obtinguda en aquesta matèria és imprescindible per cursar la resta d'assignatures relacionades amb la literatura nord-americana al llarg del grau ja que el seu objectiu principal és: donar una base històrica i social sòlida a l'estudiant; ajudar-lo a comprendre millor els textos literaris nord-americans que estudiarà en el futur, i donar-li una perspectiva que l'ajudi a entendre millor la particularitats de la cultura i les institucions d'aquella nació. Aquest curs, de fet, complementa una assignatura que els estudiants cursen durant el segon semestre de l'any i que s'anomena "Literatura Nord-americana del Segle XIX. " En completar "Història i Cultura dels Estats Units", l'estudiant podrà: comprendre i explicar els esdeveniments històrics més importants ocorreguts als Estats Units d'Amèrica; enllaçar la història amb la producció cultural d'aquest país; demostrar una molt bona comprensió lectora i anàlisi de textos històrics dels períodes examinats; evidenciar una molt bona comprensió oral i anàlisi de diverses pel·lícules, documentals, textos (etc. ) relacionats ambla història i la cultura dels Estats Units d'Amèrica; generar anàlisis escrites dels textos escrits i orals estudiats a classe; relacionar els períodes històrics amb les seves manifestacions literàries corresponents (aquesta habilitat es desenvoluparà amb conjunció amb l'assignatura "Literatura Nord-americana del segle XIX"); expressar una valoració informada sobre el textos i els esdeveniments històrics estudiats, i construir una visió crítica sobre la història, la cultura i la societat dels Estats Units d'Amèrica. |

"History and Culture of the United States" provides an introduction to the most relevant issues and 1 "History and Culture of the United States" provides an introduction to the most relevant issues and events in the History of the USA from the colonial origins of that nation through to the end of the 20th century (9/11). Likewise, this subject emphasizes the cultural production that emerges of the intersection between the History of that nation and its society. This subject fosters the analysis, the debate and the interpretation of the cultural production of the USA, a production that is rooted in the main historical events that have shaped that nation as we know it today. The academic preparation that derives from this subject is essential for all remaining USA literature subjects within the degree of English Studies in the sense that the main aim of this subject is to provide students with a solid historical base with which to approach the literary texts of the USA that are studied at a later stage. In like manner, the academic preparation that derives from this subject also establishes a perspective which helps students understand the particularities of the culture and the institutions of that country. "History and Culture of the USA," in fact, complements "19th Century US Literature," a subject that is taken in the second semester. On successfully completing "History and Culture of the United States," students will be able to: understand the most relevant events occurred in the USA throughout its history; demonstrate comprehension of the studied historical periods; show evidence of understanding films, documentaries and texts that are related with the history and the culture of the United States of America; generate written analyses of written and oral texts dealt with in class; relate historical periods with their literary manifestations (this skill will be developed jointly with 19th century US literature) and express an informed opinion about the texts and historical events studied throughout the course. |
