Background:In this study, we aimed to investigate the molecular basis of lactation as well as to identify the genetic factors that influence milk yield and composition in goats. To achieve these two goals, we have analyzed how the mRNA profile of the mammary gland changes in seven Murciano-Granadina goats at each of three different time points, i. [...]

Current knowledge about the evolutionary history of donkeys is still incomplete due to the lack of archeological and whole-genome diversity data. To fill this gap, we have de novo assembled a chromosome-level reference genome of one male Dezhou donkey and analyzed the genomes of 126 domestic donkeys and seven wild asses. [...]

In a previous study, we observed that circadian clock genes are differentially expressed in the skeletal muscle of fasting and fed sows. The goal of the current work was to investigate if these genes are also differentially expressed in tissues containing the central (hypothalamus) and peripheral (duodenum, dorsal fat, muscle, and liver) clocks. The population of Spanish sheep has decreased from 24 to 15 million heads in the last 75 years due to multiple social and economic factors. Such a demographic reduction might have caused an increase in homozygosity and inbreeding, thus limiting the viability of local breeds with excellent adaptations to harsh ecosystems. [...]

The genetic factors determining the phenotypic variation of porcine fatness phenotypes are still largely unknown. We investigated whether the polymorphism of eight genes (MIGA2, CRY2, NPAS2, CIART, ARNTL2, PER1, PER2 and PCK1), which display differential expression in the skeletal muscle of fasted and fed sows, is associated with the variation of lipid and mRNA expression phenotypes in Duroc pigs. Genetic isolation of breeds may result in a significant loss of diversity and have consequences on health and performance. In this study, we examined the effect of geographic isolation on caprine genetic diversity patterns by genotyping 480 individuals from 25 European and African breeds with the Goat SNP50 BeadChip and comparing patterns of homozygosity of insular and nearby continental breeds.
